The 2015 Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Runs held on February 22nd continued to achieve its mission of “more people moving more often” this year! Entry and finisher numbers enjoyed an increase again in 2015. Particularly impressive was the 85 percent growth in marathon entries. At the opposite end of the spectrum, and also impressive, there was a significant growth in the number of kids entered in the 2km event.

There were some outstanding performances across all events with both the pointy end and the not so pointy of the field achieving great results. In accordance with the events main motto, the event saw many first time participants jogging and walking the course.

The event accrued many terrific stories, however the performance of two amazing women merits a special mention. First is Lavinia Petrie (71), produced a World Record performance, completing the marathon in a time of 3:38.53! Secondly, Kelly-Ann Varey took out line honours in the marathon in a time of 3:02.21.

This rural event thrives on the support of its volunteers. The event organisers were particularly impressed with the 20+ Wangaratta High School student volunteers who, although unsure or nervous about their volunteer roles, rose to the occasion and left the event with increased self-esteem and a sense of pride of their vital contribution.

With ongoing valued support from sponsors and event partners, Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Runs are able to offer it’s entrants low entry fees and exceptional value for money. So make sure you put Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Runs on your race calendar for 2016.
